IUP is committed to ensuring equal access to education as intended by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Disability Access and Advising, located at 421 Eberly (664 Pratt Drive, Indiana, PA 15705), provides services to students with disabilities of all kinds, including but not limited to, adhd, hearing, learning, medical, physical, psychological, vision, and others. Because the types of disabilities served is broad, D2A2 encourages any student who feels they are experiencing impact because of a disability to reach out to discuss their situation.
Students with disabilities may contact D2A2 by emailing disability-access@iup.edu. D2A2 will then provide information about getting started with the accommodation process, including the provision of appropriate documentation. While a student responsibility, D2A2 will assist in guiding the student through the process of documenting their disability. With documentation secured, D2A2 will prepare an accommodation plan and share it with the student (accommodations themselves vary and are related to the limitations caused by the individual’s iteration of their disability). The student will then work with D2A2 to determine which of their eligible accommodations is appropriate for which classes each semester and to share the plan with professors. (While D2A2 keeps the nature of a student’s disability as confidential as possible, it is important to note that professors are not required to provide accommodations unless students have followed the approved D2A2 communication process for sharing accommodations eligibility with professors.) D2A2 will guide the student through that process.
The accommodations for which a student is eligible relates to their specific disability and its impact on their functioning; examples might include (where relevant) ASL interpreters and/or visual aids provided through D2A2, note taking, and/or other accommodations. As well as liaising with OVR or BVS (Blind and Visual Services). They might include procuring alternate text and testing accommodations. They may involve an interactive process determining if absences exceeding the norm can be allowed.
IUP ensures compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act through the provision of program access accommodations. Please direct inquiries regarding accommodations for persons with disabilities to:
