Prerequisite: Sophomore standing, 3cr of college history Japan’s modern transformation from the age of the samurai to the present. Looks at both the Japanese elites’ quest for wealth and power in the late 19th and the 20th centuries and the impact this quest has had on ordinary people. (Titled The History of Modern Japan: From the Floating World to the Present before 2016-17.)
