Description: Introduces the peoples and cultures of mainland and island Southeast Asia. Traces prehistory and the development of indigenous states in the area and impact of world religions, trade, and Western colonialism. Themes include the state, violence, marginality, and gender. Issues include ethnic minority tribal peoples, tropical deforestation, gender, effects of genocide, art and tourism, and migration.
