General Studies, BA

The Bachelor of Arts degree in general studies is designed for  learners who seek a general path to completing a four-year degree.  Under faculty advisement, the student will develop a customized plan of study that does not duplicate any existing IUP major. The General Studies degree consists of major coursework, Crimson Core coursework, and a suggested course of study towards a certificate, minor, or concentration.  The program requirements can be completed in person and/or online. 

 

Crimson Core: 40 – 42 

As outlined in the Crimson Core Requirements 

 

Controlled Electives  3 credits 

Students are required to take a second course in Written Communication. 

 

Concentration (“Theme”): 30 

Create a customized plan of study with an academic advisor that focuses on a particular need, interest, or specialty. At least 15 credits must be 300-level or above.  

Special Interest Area (“Cognate Area”): 12-18 

Complete all requirements for a recognized certificate, minor, or a concentration approved by an academic advisor.  

Free Electives: 30-38 

Total Degree Requirements: 120
