English Studies, BA

Program Codes: ENGS-BA or ENGS+SENG (English, BA w/Secondary English Education Certificate)

The English Studies BA focuses on developing students’ advanced skills in writing and reading as well as teaching creative and critical thinking skills. English majors study a wide variety of subjects ranging from literary theory to practical pedagogy in an atmosphere that encourages and fosters a high degree of professional competence and commitment. English Studies majors choose one of three specializations or Secondary English Education Certificate.

Literature & Culture Specialization: The Literature & Culture Specialization enables students to design a course of study in the history, meaning, function, and aesthetics of texts of all kinds. A student who completes this specialization will be able to identify the unique aesthetic, formal, material, and symbolic qualities of literary and other texts

New Media Literacy Specialization: The New Media Literacy Specialization allows students to design a course of study with a particular focus on the study of interactive digital writing, media, and film. A student who completes this specialization will be able to identify the unique aesthetic, formal, material, and symbolic qualities of new media and digital texts.

Writing Studies Specialization: The Writing Studies Specialization enables students to design a course of study in the theory and practice of writing in a variety of genres. A student who completes this specialization will be able to demonstrate skills in the analysis, writing, and presentation of texts.

Secondary English Education Certificate : The Secondary English Education Certificate is designed for students interested in earning Pennsylvania state certification to teach English Language Arts for 7th-12th grades. A student who completes this certificate will gain a broad and solid foundation in English Studies, including pedagogy, literature, language, composition, and literacy.

Secondary English Certificate must take SPSY 102; English Studies can choose.

Civic Readiness: 3cr


Secondary English Certificate must take HIST 196; English Studies can choose.

English Specialization: 12-15


Complete one specialization. English Education specialization students must also complete the Secondary English Education Certificate.

Literature and Culture Specialization: 12


  • Three additionas courses from the Literary Studies– American , British, global, or Genres and Theories categories. Credits: 9
  • One additional course from any of the seven English Core categories: Credits: 3
  • - OR -

  • Credits: 3-12

New Media Literacy Specialization: 12


  • Two additional courses from the New Media Literacy category. Credits: 6
  • One additional course from any of the seven English Core categories. Credits: 3
  • - AND/OR -

  • Credits: 3-12

English Education Specialization: 15


Please refer to the Secondary English Education Certificate  for additional certificate requirements. This specialization must be completed in conjunction with the Secondary English Education Certificate.

Free Electives: 42-44


For Students in the Literature & Culture, New Media Literacy, OR Writing Studies Specializations: Enough courses to complete all remaining credits needed to reach 120 total credits for graduation (42-44 credits) (Use for a certificate, double major, or minor.)

Secondary English Education Certificate students are required to complete the following certificate, which will count as part of their free electives. This Certificate must be completed in conjunction with the English Education Specialization.

Total Required Credits: 120


(1) Secondary English Education Certificate students must take PSYC 101  as one of their Crimson Core Electives.

(2) Students are required to take any 2 courses of CHIN, FREN, GERM, SPAN, as part of their Crimson Core.  Secondary English Education Certificate students will take foreign language as part of their Free Elective credits.

(3) Secondary English Education Certificate students must take SPSY 102  and MATH 117 as their Crimson Core Electives.

(4) Not permitted for Secondary English Education Certificate in this category.

(5) Secondary English Education Certificate students must take either ENGL 310  OR ENGL 314  .

(6) ENGL 484 (capstone course) is not required for Secondary English Education Certificate students.

(7) The required Professional Sequence for the Secondary English Education Certificate will count toward Free Elective credits.
