Medical Imaging/Nuclear Medicine Technology, BS

The program leading to the bachelor of science degree in Medical Imaging is designed to prepare students for admission into anIUP affiliate institution focused on one of three tracks: Nuclear Medicine Technology, Diagnostic Medical Sonography(Ultrasound), or Echocardiography. This program is a 3+1 whereby the student spends the first three years at IUP taking therequired math/science and liberal studies courses and then 12 - 20 months at an affiliate where they earn a certificate in one ofthe specialty diagnostic imaging programs. All of the coursework at IUP is preparatory towards the final year and therequirements by the Medical Imaging profession. A “C” or better in the following courses is required:MATH 105 , CHEM 103 , ENGL 101 , PHYS 111 , BIOL 150 , BIOL 200  , and BIOL 240  .  Acceptance at an affiliate school is contingent upon the studentmeeting the academic program requirements. At the end of their senior year, upon successful completion of the certificateprogram at an articulated clinical affiliate accredited within the specific discipline, IUP will grant 32 credits that will be applied tothe student’s transcript and the bachelor’s degree in the Diagnostic Imaging specialization will be conferred.

(1) These courses are offered at the University of Findlay, Saint Joseph’s University, and Community College of Allegheny County. These courses are consistent with requirements of the Joint Review committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT). The courses are completed during the final 12 months of the degree program.

(2) Students are required to complete these courses before the clinical trianing.

(3) Students are required to take 24 free electives to explore additional interests that may support alternative career paths.
